When the townsman found out that the miller intended to wed his daughter he forbid her to see him and threatened her with excommunication if she persisted in the relationship.
As with any romance love conquered all and the daughter fled to the arms of her lover leaving her excommunicated from her fathers wealth and standing.
As a result her father did not provide the traditional "dowry"
to set up her home as per the custom of the time.
When the community heard of this they came together to help the
well-respected miller by "showering" his new bride with household gifts hence the name "Bridal Shower"
